I have read a variety of
articles that continually support reading at home with direct success in
reading comprehension, vocabulary, context clues, etc... I know some
students struggle with the idea of having to read at home as part of
their nightly routine. Parents have come to me in the past not knowing
how to get their child to VOLUNTARY read on their own. In my own
research, I found that reading at home does not have to be an isolated
event. If a student who is struggling with the idea of reading at home
try: discussing with them the book your reading, letting them read a
comic or magazine or reading a book together. Believe it or not some of
my students' favorite part of the school day is read aloud time. Never
think that your child is too old to be read aloud to.
A great resource that I
found was, "The Read Aloud Handbook" written by Jim Trelease. What I
like about this book is that gives both sides of the story when it comes
to reading. Also the book is written for parents AND teachers alike to
benefit from his own research. This handbook has a great collection of
book titles and websites for kids.
